Professional Profile: Prof. Lutjens is currently Professor in Pension Law at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Faculty of Law) and director of the VU Centre for Research on Pension Law and Lawyer in the Amsterdam office of the international law firm DLA Piper N.V. on the pension department. As a lawyer Eric Lutjens acted in a lot of important court cases. Among them the Brentjens, Albany en Drijvende Bokken cases, decision of the European Court of Justice of 30 september 1999 concerning the EU-competition law and the compulsory participation in industry wide pension funds. Furtnermore Lutjens dealt with a lot of national pension cases before the High Court of Justice in the Netherlands.
Some of his most important clients are: ABP, Dutch pension fund for civil servants, Pension fund for building industry, Pension fund for commercial transport, Generali Life insurance company, Pension fund British American Tobacco.
Amongst other previous prestigious positions Prof. Lutjens was advisor to the pensions department of the ministry of Social affairs.


Currently, Prof Lutjens is Member of the Scientific Council of AEIP, president of Supervisory Board of Agriculture Pension fond, Member of Supervisory Board of AE pension consultancy firm, president of the board of the Dutch pension fund for professional cyclists, president of the board of the Dutch Association of Pension Lawyers and Member of the European Network for Research on Supplementary Pensions. From 1999 to 2006 he has been Member of Supervisory Board of Insurance company DBV N.V.


Professor Lutjens has published numerous works on pensions and is chief editor of Pensioen & Praktijk, an important magazine on pension issues. He has set up periodical on pension case law and is editor of the Dutch magazine dealing with pension issues Tijdschrift voor Pensioenvraagstukken.


Professor Lutjens is a frequent and renown speaker on national and international conferences.

Selected Works: Lutjens has written a number of publications concerning pensions. In 1989 he wrote his dissertation on Pension provisions for employees. Other important publications are:
  • comment on the Dutch Pension Law
  • book on Compulsory participation in Industry wide pension funds
  • book on Defined Contribution Pension Schemes
  • publications on a diversity of other subjects, such as equal treatment man and women, discrimination on age, pension rights in a take over of a company, the definition of pension, European pension fund Directive
  • in March 2007 his book on pension law was published, with analysis and comments on new legislation on Supplementary pensions introduced on 1 January 2007, in 2008 the second edition and in 2010 third edition
  • in 2010 a study on the co-determination of the Workscouncil was submitted
