His scientific contributions have established him as a major scholar, who is on many shortlists for the Nobel Prize. At the same time, he is also known worldwide for his numerous accessible writings in major magazines (such as <i>The Economist and Foreign Affairs<\/i>) and newspapers (such as <i>The Financial Times<\/i> and the <i>Wall Street Journal<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>He has also published hugely successful mass-accessible books, the first being the <i>Economics of Underdeveloped Countries<\/i> (Weidenfeld &amp; Nicolson, 1966) which achieved six-digit sales at the time, and the latest being In <i>Defense of Globalization<\/i> (Oxford, 2004) which has sold 50,000 copies in English hardback within a year and received worldwide acclaim in shape of over 40 fine reviews in leading magazines and newspapers, while going into immediate translation into several languages.<\/p>\n<p>He also appears frequently on television, including the <i>Charlie Rose Show<\/i>, the <i>Lehrer News Hour<\/i>, <i>CNN<\/i>, <i>BBC<\/i>etc. He has been honoured with six festschrift conferences in his honour, a record among distinguished economists, the latest being at <i>Columbia University<\/i> on August 5th, which included attendance and tributes by UN Secretary General <i>Kofi Annan<\/i>, Nobel Laureate Robert Solow, Larry Summers (President of Harvard and former Secretary of the US Treasury), the New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, and several University Presidents.<\/p>\n<p>Messages included one from the Indian Prime Minister and another from the WTO Director General Dr. Supachai. Professor Bhagwati has also served as Economic Policy Adviser to the Director General of GATT (1991-93), External Adviser to the WTO and Special Adviser (with Under-secretary General status) to the UN on Globalization.
