In less than a year after being named Tivity Health CEO (formerly Healthways) Donato executed a turnaround of the company’s performance by harnessing the lessons he learned through various adversities and “bulldozer” moments. He engineered a creative sale of one of the company’s non-performing divisions, adding nearly $1 billion of valuation to the company. In 2008, he founded Physicians Interactive Holdings (Aptus Health sold to Merck and later to WebMD), a global provider of insight-driven digital engagement solutions for healthcare professionals and consumers. There he served as CEO and Chairman prior to joining Healthways.
Donato has been widely recognized for his more than four-decade commitment to compassionate leadership, social change and healthcare innovation. In 2014, he was honored alongside Hillary Clinton, Robert DeNiro and Tony Bennett, with the prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Ripple of Hope Award and in 2017 he received the Robert F. Kennedy Children’s Action Corps Embracing the Legacy Award, which recognizes individuals who have worked tirelessly to better the lives of children and their families. He was recognized by the Nashville Business Journal as one of Nashville’s Most Admired CEOs in 2018. He was awarded the LifeTime Red Jacket Award by PharmaVoice reflecting his commitment to furthering the life-sciences industry through leadership, innovation, motivation, mentorship, and philanthropy.
In 2011, he founded Health eVillages, a non-profit organization which provides state-of-the-art mobile health technology in the most challenging clinical environments. He is the Chairman and Founder of the TramutoPorter Foundation, which helps individuals and organizations achieve Educational and healthcare goals and promote compassionate leadership. In 2022, he released his second book. The Double Bottom Line: How Compassionate Leaders Captivate Hearts and Deliver Results released last month by Fast Company and in 2023 the book was released in Italy by Rizzoli Libri. He is also the author of Life’s Bulldozer Moments: How adversity leads to success in life and Business (also available in Italy).
He holds an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the College of Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell; an honorary Doctor of Science from Thomas Jefferson University; an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Lasell University; an honorary Doctor of Public Service from St. Joseph’s College in Standish, Maine and an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Regis College, Boston, Massachusetts.
He is an international speaker and regularly participates in conferences and workshops on artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and augmented leadership. He has spoken at notable events such as JP Morgan Healthcare Conference, HIMSS Global Conference, Harvard Business School, and many others.
Donato serves on several executive leadership boards including Zeel Health, Esperta Health, Skyscape Health, Robert F Kennedy Human Rights USA Leadership Council where he serves as Chairman, RFK Human Rights Italia where he serves a Co-Chairman of the Board. He serves also as the Vice President of the association Un bacio al Parkinson in Florence, Italy. He is a Board Advisor to Jukebox Health and Y2X Life Sciences and is also a member of the Advisory Board for Boston University School of Public Health. In 2020, he was appointed as the first Honorary Scholar in Residence for St. Joseph’s College, Standish, Maine.
