Riccardo Ceccarelli is a Sports Medicine Doctor and one of the leading international experts in applied mental performance. His career began in the late 1980s in Formula 1 with the March Leyton House team, working with drivers such as Ivan Capelli and Mauricio Gugelmin in extremely high-pressure competitive environments.
In the early 1990s, Dr. Ceccarelli founded Formula Medicine, now an international reference point in Motorsport and a centre specialized in the psychophysical training of élite athletes. Throughout his Formula 1 career, he has worked with 82 drivers and 19 teams, taking part in over 680 Grands Prix. Expanding his work across all motorsport categories, he has supported more than 1,800 drivers from 72 countries across five continents, later applying his method to other sports and high-complexity environments.
From the very beginning, he promoted a unique scientific research based on monitoring biometric data of Formula 1 and MotoGP drivers during races, in order to analyse their physical and mental workload. The findings led to further laboratory studies, including functional magnetic resonance imaging, highlighting that the key trait of top-performing athletes is mental economy—the ability to maintain high performance while minimizing psychophysical energy expenditure. From this evidence, Mental Economy Training® (MET®) was developed: an objective mental training protocol aimed at optimizing performance by reducing cognitive load and improving neural efficiency.
In recent years, MET® has been adopted by international-level athletes such as Jannik Sinner, Mikaela Shiffrin, and numerous professional football players, as well as in corporate, aviation, and military settings. In 2021, Ceccarelli founded Mental Economy, a startup focused on the technological development and global dissemination of MET®. He continues his research and educational work through his books, including Cervello superveloce and Nella mente del campione, with forewords by Charles Leclerc and Jannik Sinner.
Today, he is recognized as a pioneer in mental performance and a consultant for athletes and international organizations, with a focus on cognitive efficiency, stress management, and performance optimization in extreme, high-pressure environments.
